The ‘Third Mission’ and public engagement are the activities through which the University contributes, together with local stakeholders, to the inclusive and sustainable growth of the community from a social, cultural and economic perspective.
Thanks to the SUpeR – UniTo Space for Research, work has begun in collaboration with Cineca to develop and implement a new dashboard (following those related to research products and projects) useful to analyse in real time the results and impact of Knowledge valorization actions at both the university level and within individual departments.
With the transition of the Register to the Cineca platform, it has become possible to analyse the number of hours dedicated to PE activities according to the role of the participants.
Regarding the relationship between the predominant categories of public engagement and the allocated budget, the category that received the most investment in 2023 is related to activities for the education sector (44.54% of the total budget indicated for institutional activities amounting to €4,801,968) followed by the organisation of events open to the community (12.94%) and initiatives for the valorization, consultation and sharing of research (12.39%).

UniTo aims to enhance its social responsibility by sharing the processes and results of research, engaging society, and implementing public engagement projects that experiment with different tools and languages to establish stable relationships of listening, dialogue, and collaboration between the research community and various stakeholders. In this regard, through biennial funding calls, the university allocates funds dedicated to promoting public engagement engagement actions that involve the academic community, citizens, schools, institutions, and businesses.
With the call for proposals issued in 2023, the University funded 15 projects for a total of € 520,000.
The University of Turin, together with its 2i3T Incubator, is constantly engaged in activities of scientific, technological and cultural transfer and productive transformation of knowledge, through which relations are developed between the world of research, the community, businesses, schools and institutions. In particular, these objectives are realised through three types of actions:
In 2023:
- 16 new patents (44 new patents registered in 2021- 2023)
- 2 new companies recognised as university spin-offs
- around 90 individual connections between researchers and companies in specific networking initiatives
- the ‘Becoming an entrepreneur’ course (introductory, 2 editions per year) in the a.y. 2022/2023, registered a total of 743 participants, of whom 246 completed the course and 128 passed the final examination
- the Academy 2030 course (formerly Startup creation Lab) had a total of 185 enrolled and 86 students completed the course.
