Scientific research ENG

From a purely quantitative point of view, UniTo lecturers were the authors of an average of over 7,000 products/year, focusing the analysis on the main types of publications only, i.e. those mainly considered for the national ASN qualification.

Although a decrease in the number of publications may be observed, this does not correspond to a decline in the quality of the research produced, as it can be deduced by the stable results obtained in international rankings.

Part of the reason for the decrease in the figure is attributable to the lockdown of the pandemic period, which did not allow for the acquisition of new data.

Confirming this, 166 University of Turin lecturers are included in the 2023 World’s 2% Top Scientists ranking of the most cited researchers worldwide. Furthermore, considering the publications indexed in the Scopus – Scimago database, the university is categorized in the top quartile, Q1, on a scale ranging from Q1 (best) to Q4 (worst). This rating indicates the excellence of the university’s research.

As of December 31, 2023, 86% of the Lecturers at the university meet the requirements for national qualification for higher academic ranks. Although the situation varies among different departments (with an average of 86% across the university, ranging from 94.7% to 74.2%), there is still an observed improvement compared to the previous year’s assessment (university average of 84.9%, with a range of 92.8% to 71.9%).

Projects | Focus

In 2023 the University’s commitment to encouraging and supporting the participation of researchers in European and international calls for proposals continued. The following table summarizes the total funding obtained by UniTo from competitive international, national, regional, and local grants over the three-year period from 2021 to 2023.

The data indicates a positive growth trend regarding both the number of funded projects and the amounts of funding received. The 2023 data reveals a significant increase in funding received from the ministries, with a rise in the number of funded projects compared to 2022 of 765.52%, along with an increase in the total funding amount of 63.13% over the same period.

With the aim of increasing the commitment and success rate of funded projects, “Squadra” was created.

The project, developed within the framework of the agreement with the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, has enabled 27 young designers to join the ranks of professors and researchers between 2022 and 2023 to take care of the needs and strategies of projects at UniTo.

SQUADRA Project

The SQUADRA Project – UniTo Team for Supporting University Research was launched in 2022 with the aim of establishing an operational support organization for applications related to the PNRR pillars, as well as for the subsequent management of awarded projects, explicitly focused on the progressive integration of skills and personnel within the university organization.

Developed as part of the agreement with the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, the project has facilitated the recruitment of young high-potential research and innovation project designers (20 in 2022 and an additional 7 in 2023), as a means to strengthen internal competencies at the university.

This initiative has an economic dimension of 3.2 million euros (2.5 million euros allocated in 2022, plus an additional contribution of 882,000 euros from the Compagnia di San Paolo in 2023), corresponding to the total value of the initiative supported by the university and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation under the ongoing three-year agreement, net of the costs already reported and incurred in 2022.

The SQUADRA Team has received tailored training that has enabled the personnel involved in the program to acquire the skills necessary for achieving the project’s objectives.

The following numbers illustrate the training program:

  • 80 hours of training, spread over 10 months
  • 16 lecturers (among Technical-Administrative staff, University Register “MASTER EXPERT” and non-Registered) + 2 UniTo Professors – by subject expertise
  • 2 External bodies case study
  • 543 participants: total SQUADRA + administrative technical staff

This intervention has an economic dimension of €3.2 million (€2.5 million exposed in 2022, plus an additional allocation of €882,000 from the Compagnia di San Paolo in 2023), corresponding to the total value of the initiative supported by the University and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation under the current three-year agreement, net of the costs already shown and incurred in 2022.
